- The description should fit.
An estimate. Google measures by pixel width, adjusts by device, and sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions.
Write titles that survive the cut
Put the words a searcher types first, and the brand last. If the title is cut, the part that matters is still visible. Keep each title unique across your site so Google does not have to choose between near-identical pages.
Write descriptions that earn the click
Say what the page offers and one concrete detail, such as a price, a location or a number of options. Google's guidance on snippets and title links covers how it chooses what to show.
To check the tags across many pages at once, use the meta tag checker.
Questions
- How long can a Google title be?
- Google cuts titles by pixel width rather than a fixed character count, so the limit depends on the letters used and the device. Around 50 to 60 characters usually fits on desktop. This preview measures the width of your actual text.
- Why does Google show a different title or description than mine?
- Google may rewrite titles and generate descriptions from page content when it thinks they match the query better. Its documentation on title links and snippets explains when and how.
- Does the meta description affect rankings?
- No. It affects whether people click. A specific description that matches the search is more likely to be shown and chosen.
