Hreflang checker
Enter a URL to list its hreflang tags, check the language and region codes, and confirm that each alternate version links back to it.
The rules that matter
- Each version lists every version, including itself.
- Annotations are confirmed in both directions.
- Codes use ISO 639-1 for language, optionally followed by an ISO 3166-1 region, such as
enoren-gb. x-defaultmarks the page for users who match no listed language.
These rules come from Google's guide to localized versions of your pages. Make sure each alternate URL returns 200 and carries a self-referencing canonical; the canonical checker covers that.
Questions
- What is hreflang?
- An annotation that tells Google which language or regional version of a page to show to which users. Each version lists all the others, including itself.
- What are return links?
- If page A lists page B as an alternate, page B must list page A. Google may ignore hreflang annotations that are not confirmed both ways.
- Where else can hreflang be set?
- In an XML sitemap or in HTTP headers for non-HTML files. This checker reads the tags in the page head only.
