Best AI SEO tools in 2026: a buyer's guide grouped by the job you need done
Mohit M, SEO · Updated
The right AI SEO tool depends on the job. To track AI answers, look at Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Scrunch or AthenaHQ; to optimise content, Surfer; for an all-in-one suite, Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking; for deep technical crawls, Screaming Frog; and for an agent that changes your site, compare ChatSEO, BabyLoveGrowth and XeoRank, which differ in how much control you keep.
Most teams need two or three of these jobs done, so we group tools by job rather than ranking them. We make XeoRank and have placed it where it fits rather than first. Every price and feature comes from the vendor's own pages, checked 13 October 2026. Prices change often, so confirm before you buy.
The short answer
Pick tools by the job you need done. Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Scrunch and AthenaHQ track AI answers, Surfer optimises content, Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking are all-in-one suites, and Screaming Frog goes furthest on raw crawl depth. For an agent that changes your site, compare ChatSEO, BabyLoveGrowth and XeoRank on how much control you keep, and check whether each one asks before anything goes live.

1. AI visibility tracking
These tools ask AI engines your buyers' questions and record whether you are mentioned or cited. Our best AI visibility tools guide covers them in more depth.
Peec AI Starter is $95 a month ($80 billed annually) for 50 prompts on three models you choose, with unlimited users. Otterly Lite is about $25 to $29 a month (both figures appear on its pricing page) for 15 prompts on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, the lowest entry price among the dedicated trackers we found.
Peec AI is best for teams that want unlimited users on the entry plan. Otterly is best for buyers who want the lowest entry price.
Scrunch Core is $250 a month for 125 unique prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot; the custom-priced Enterprise plan covers nine engines, including Claude, Gemini and Meta AI, and lists AXP, a separate AI-readable version of your site for bots. AthenaHQ has a free plan with $25 of credit and a $295 Starter plan covering 11 engines. Profound is the enterprise option, with a 7-day trial and custom pricing for up to nine engines.
Scrunch is best for more prompts on an entry plan. AthenaHQ is best for the most engines on a self-serve plan. Profound is best for enterprise teams.
If you already pay for a suite, its AI module may be enough. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 a month for 25 prompts, Ahrefs Brand Radar starts at $199 a month and is sold on its own or with a plan, and SE Ranking's SE Visible is $99 a month for 200 prompts.
XeoRank asks ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity your buyer questions and reports each engine separately, next to an overall rate. Starter is $19 a month and Pro is $49 a month; see pricing for what each plan includes. It tracks fewer engines than AthenaHQ, Profound or Scrunch Enterprise, and includes fewer prompts than Scrunch Core. Its free AI visibility check asks Gemini three questions with no login.
For head-to-heads, see Scrunch alternatives, Ahrefs Brand Radar alternatives and XeoRank vs AthenaHQ.
2. Content optimisation and writing
Surfer is built for writers optimising pages. Billed yearly, Discovery is $49 a month for 120 documents and one seat, with the content editor, AI writer and content audit. Its WordPress plugin exports to a new draft or an existing post, and its MCP server writes content inside Surfer. Standard ($99) includes 25 AI prompts, and AI Search Analytics is a separate tracking-only plan at $82 a month.
Best for writers who want an editor, an AI writer and a content audit in one place.
Writesonic Starter is $79 a month billed annually for 15 articles, 10 site audits and 50 prompts tracked on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, and its WordPress integration creates new posts as drafts and can update existing posts. See Writesonic alternatives.
Best for teams that want writing and tracking in one plan.
Semrush's Content Toolkit is $60 a month billed annually, with a WordPress plugin that publishes live or as a draft. SE Ranking's Content Editor exports to WordPress with the post status you choose.
XeoRank is not a one-click article writer. On Pro and above (pricing), its Writing Agent reviews drafts for unsourced claims and filler, suggests small fixes you choose to apply, and drafts only from your own notes or interview answers. Its content engine turns Search Console opportunities into evidence-based briefs; a new brief publishes to WordPress as a draft, and a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post.
3. All-in-one SEO suites with AI features
Suites hold a keyword database, backlink index, rank tracker and site audit in one subscription, and now sell AI tracking too.
Semrush covers SEO, PPC, local, content and market data. Its prices page lists the SEO plan at $139 a month ($117.33 billed annually) and Starter at $199 with 50 AI prompts, while its SEO Toolkit knowledge base lists Pro, Guru and Business at $139.95, $249.95 and $499.95, so check which applies to you. Semrush reports 28.8 billion keywords across 142 databases and 43 trillion backlinks (data). There is a 7-day free trial and a limited free plan, and its MCP server is read-only and uses API units.
Best for teams that need SEO, PPC, local, content and market data in one account.
Ahrefs has the lowest entry price of the three large suites: Starter is $29 a month, billed monthly, with 50 tracked keywords, Site Audit and Rank Tracker (Starter plan). Lite is $129 with 750 tracked keywords and 5 AI prompts. Ahrefs reports 29 billion keywords and 35 trillion backlinks of history (big data). Its MCP server is on Lite and above, and Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, is free for verified sites.
Best for teams that want a large suite at the lowest entry price.
SE Ranking is priced for agencies and smaller businesses. Core is $129 a month ($103.20 billed annually) with 10 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, 250,000 audit pages, 100 GEO prompts a day across 5 LLMs and MCP access, plus a 14-day free trial with no card.
White label is an Agency Pack add-on at $69 a month.
Best for agencies and smaller businesses that want AI prompts and MCP access included in the suite.
XeoRank is a smaller suite: a technical SEO crawler, keyword research with clusters, Search Console and GA4 reports with PDF or Google Doc export, and, on Pro and above, live rank checks by country, state or city and backlinks with a disavow file (pricing). Its keyword database and backlink index are much smaller than Semrush's or Ahrefs'. It also offers 14 free SEO tools.
4. Technical crawling
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler for Windows, macOS and Linux, free for up to 500 URLs. A paid licence, per user per year, removes the limit, so crawls are bounded by your machine's memory and storage. The price is £199 a year on its product page and $279 a year on its pricing page. It connects to Google Analytics, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights. It has no cloud version, rank tracking or AI visibility tracking, and it does not change your site.
Best for deep crawls on your own machine.
Suite crawlers run in the cloud. Semrush's Site Audit runs over 140 checks, with 100,000 pages a month on the entry tier, and Ahrefs includes Site Audit from its Starter plan.
XeoRank's crawler is page-type aware and keeps editorial checks such as author and sources out of the issue list. Crawls started from the dashboard render JavaScript in a headless browser when a page needs it. It also finds broken links, redirect chains and duplicate titles, and puts issues in a fix queue you can link to your goals.
For raw crawl depth on your own machine, Screaming Frog goes further.
5. Agents that change your site
Ask two questions: does it publish new content or edit pages you already have, and does it ask before anything goes live?
BabyLoveGrowth writes articles in volume (Grow is $49 a month for 30 articles) and runs a link-exchange backlink network. It publishes to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and others through an auto-publish setting, and its settings docs do not document an approval step. Its MCP server is free and read-only.
Best for article volume.
ChatSEO is a chat-based assistant for non-experts that reads Search Console and Google Analytics. Starter runs from €29 to €79 a month, one credit is one message, and MCP starts on Pro (pricing). It publishes and updates articles on WordPress, Shopify and Webflow only if you ask, and its MCP server has 38 tools, including ones that publish, update and delete Shopify articles and one that removes a site and its data from ChatSEO, with no confirmation step described.
Best for non-experts who want to work in a chat.
Ahrefs' Patches change titles and meta descriptions only, through a JavaScript snippet or a Cloudflare Worker, and you publish each one by hand; publishing them needs the Project Boost Max add-on at $200 a month per project (pricing). Several other tools mainly publish new posts, and some can also update existing ones: AthenaHQ publishes to eight CMSs and updates existing WordPress posts, Writesonic sends a new draft or an updated post to WordPress, Surfer exports to a new draft or an existing post, and SE Ranking exports with the status you choose.
XeoRank edits the pages you already have. Through its MCP server, which has more than 200 tools and is on every plan, Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor or VS Code can rewrite headings, add schema, fix titles in Yoast or Rank Math, rebuild an Elementor section as native widgets, or edit Framer and code sites. On WordPress, writes are off for each site until you enable them, new pages go in as drafts with preview links, and every change to a page's content is snapshotted so you can roll it back. It does not generate articles in one click, and it has no bot-facing version of the site like Scrunch's AXP.
Best for teams that want an agent to edit the pages they already have, with the assistant asking first and rollback on WordPress.
How to choose
- List the jobs you need done. Most teams need AI tracking plus one or two of the others.
- Price the combination, not the single tool. A suite plus an AI add-on can cost more than one tool that covers both, or less if you already pay for the suite.
- Decide who approves changes. If a tool can publish, check whether it asks first and whether you can undo it.
- Trial two tools on the same buyer questions and compare the cited sources each reports. Answers vary between runs, so trust sources that appear in both.
Sources and how we compared
We compared each tool using its own pricing page, feature pages and help documentation, all checked on 13 October 2026. For each one we recorded the lowest paid plan, its main job, AI answer tracking, whether it can change your website, and whether it offers an MCP server.
Where two of a vendor's own pages disagree, we show both figures. We did not buy every plan, so features behind a sales call are described from the vendor's documentation. XeoRank is our product, and its details come from our own pricing page and documentation.
Questions
- What is an AI SEO tool?
- Software that uses AI to do SEO work, or that measures how AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features treat your site. In practice that covers five jobs: AI visibility tracking, content optimisation, all-in-one SEO suites, technical crawling and agents that change your site.
- What is the cheapest AI SEO tool?
- It depends on the job. Among the paid plans we checked on 13 October 2026, XeoRank Starter is $19 a month, Otterly.AI Lite is about $25 to $29 a month and Ahrefs Starter is $29 a month. Screaming Frog's crawler is free for up to 500 URLs, and Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) is free for verified sites.
- Can an AI SEO tool change my website without asking?
- Some can. BabyLoveGrowth has an auto-publish setting with no approval step documented, and ChatSEO's MCP server includes tools that delete Shopify articles and remove a site from ChatSEO, with no confirmation step described. XeoRank works through your AI assistant, which asks before each tool call; XeoRank keeps WordPress writes off until you turn them on for each site and snapshots WordPress page content so you can restore it.
- Do I still need Semrush or Ahrefs if I use an AI visibility tool?
- If you rely on deep keyword and backlink data, probably yes. Dedicated AI trackers focus on AI answers rather than keyword and backlink research. Both Semrush and Ahrefs now sell AI tracking of their own, so you may be able to add a module instead of a new tool.
- What should an agency look for in an AI SEO tool?
- Per-engine AI tracking, client-ready reports and a clear rule about who approves changes to a client's site. SE Ranking sells white label as an Agency Pack add-on, and XeoRank includes white-label reports on its Growth plan.
