Rank tracker for Google, by country, city, language and device

, SEO · Updated

XeoRank's rank tracker checks where your site ranks in Google for the keywords you track, in the country, state or city, language and device you choose. Each check records your position and the URL that ranks, and live rank checks are on Pro and above.

Rankings depend on where and how someone searches, so a position only means something with its location and device attached. XeoRank keeps that context with every check.

Who it is for

  • Local businesses that care about one city or region, not national averages.
  • Companies selling in several countries or languages that need to see each market separately.
  • Agencies that report rankings to clients alongside Search Console and AI visibility.
  • Teams that want an AI assistant to check rankings and tell them what to do about the keywords that are stuck.

What you can set

Locationcountry, state or city
Languagethe search language for that market
Devicedesktop or mobile

Set the location once for the site and every check uses it, so history and reports compare like with like. Your AI assistant can set it for you through the MCP server.

Adding keywords

You can add keywords to track by hand, promote them from keyword research and keyword clustering, or seed them from your Search Console queries so you start with terms you already get impressions for. Tracked keywords can be classified by search intent and funnel stage, which helps when you report on the keywords that bring buyers rather than readers. Start with the terms that lead to sales or sign-ups rather than every term you could rank for; a focused list checked in the right market is easier to act on.

What each check tells you

  • Your position in Google for that keyword, location, language and device.
  • The URL that ranks. If Google ranks your blog post when you wanted the service page to rank, you see it straight away. Your AI assistant can correct which page a keyword is meant to map to.
  • Earlier checks are kept as snapshots, so you can compare positions over time and see what moved.

Live checks run when you or your AI assistant ask for them.

Setting it up

  1. Set the ranking location, language and device for the site. Your assistant can do it with set_ranking_location.
  2. Add keywords by hand, from research or from your Search Console queries (add_tracked_keywords).
  3. Run a live check with check_tracked_keyword_rankings or from the dashboard. Live checks are on Pro and above.
  4. Review the ranking URL for each keyword and fix any keyword that maps to the wrong page.

Rank tracker and Search Console are different measures

Search Console reports an average position. Google's help page defines it as the topmost position your site occupied for each query, averaged across all queries in which your property appeared. That blends every location and device, and it only covers queries where you already got impressions.

A rank tracker answers a narrower question: where do I rank for this keyword, in this city, on this device, right now? It also covers keywords where you do not appear yet. Both are useful, and XeoRank shows both. A practical split: use Search Console to find the queries you already appear for, then track the ones that matter commercially in the exact market you sell in. Search Console data comes in through the Search Console integration.

From rankings to fixes

A ranking on its own is a number. XeoRank connects it to work:

  1. Tracked keywords that are stuck, for example sitting on page two, appear in content opportunities.
  2. From an opportunity, XeoRank builds a content brief with your Search Console queries, your own ranking pages as internal-link targets, the headings and entities rival pages cover, and the gaps. A rankability score from 0 to 100 is calculated by fixed rules, not by a model.
  3. Publishing a new brief creates a WordPress draft, and publishing a brief that optimises an existing page updates that page. Writing blockers such as unsourced claims or placeholders stop it from publishing until they are fixed or a person overrides them, with a reason, in the dashboard.

With the XeoRank MCP server connected to Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor or VS Code, you can ask:

"Check rankings for our tracked keywords on mobile in Austin. Which ones dropped, which URL ranks for each, and what would you change on those pages?"

If you then ask the assistant to rewrite a title or meta description on WordPress, it writes the change to Yoast, Rank Math or All in One SEO, or outputs the tags itself if none is installed. Your assistant asks before each tool call, and writes are off for each site until you turn them on. Title and meta changes are not snapshotted; edits to a page's content keep a snapshot you can restore.

What it does not do

  • It does not track Bing or other search engines. Rank checks use Google.
  • It does not track AI answers. Mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity are covered by AI visibility tracking, per engine.
  • It does not match every browser exactly. A check is one reading for one location, language and device, so it can differ from what you see when you search from your own browser.
  • It does not promise movement. It tells you where you stand and which page ranks; changing the position takes work on the page.

Questions

Can I track Google rankings for a specific city?
Yes. XeoRank lets you set the location for rank checks at country, state or city level, together with the search language and the device, desktop or mobile. Each check then reports the position you hold in that market.
Which XeoRank plan includes live rank checks?
Live rank checks are on Pro and above. Pro is $49 a month and Growth is $109 a month. See the pricing page for what each plan includes.
How is a rank tracker different from Search Console's average position?
Google's help page says Search Console's position is the topmost position your site held for each query, averaged across all queries where it appeared, across every location and device. A rank tracker checks one keyword in one chosen location, language and device, including keywords where you do not appear yet.
Does XeoRank track rankings in ChatGPT or other AI answers?
Not in the rank tracker, which checks Google search results. Whether ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity mention you is covered by XeoRank's AI visibility tracking, which reports each engine separately.
Does the rank tracker show which page ranks for a keyword?
Yes. Each check records the position and the URL that ranks. If Google ranks a different page than the one you intended, you can see it, and your AI assistant can correct which page a keyword should map to.
