SE Ranking alternatives: five SEO tools compared on price, data, AI tracking and site changes

, SEO · Updated

The usual SE Ranking alternatives are Semrush and Ahrefs for larger keyword and backlink databases, Surfer for content optimization, Screaming Frog for desktop crawling, and XeoRank for a lower entry price with technical SEO, AI answer tracking and an agent that edits your site through your own AI assistant. SE Ranking itself is an all-in-one suite priced for agencies and small businesses: Core is $129 a month, or $103.20 billed annually, with a 14-day free trial and no card on its pricing page.

We make XeoRank, one of the tools compared here. Every competitor price below comes from the vendor's own page, checked 13 October 2026. Prices change often, so confirm on the vendor's site before you buy.

The short answer

SE Ranking remains the better fit for an agency or small in-house team that wants rank tracking, audits, AI prompts and white label in one subscription. If research depth matters most, compare Semrush and Ahrefs on the data you use, and if you want the same scope for less, start with Ahrefs Starter or XeoRank Starter. XeoRank also fits when audits produce lists nobody fixes, since its agent makes the changes through your own AI assistant, which asks before each one.

Why people look for an SE Ranking alternative

They want more data. For keyword and backlink research at scale, Semrush reports 28.8 billion keywords across 142 databases and 43 trillion backlinks on its data page, and Ahrefs reports 29 billion keywords and 35 trillion backlinks in its history on its big data page. Each vendor counts differently, and their comparison pages favor themselves (Semrush's, Ahrefs').

They want a lower entry price. Core is $129 a month with one seat (SE Ranking pricing). Ahrefs Starter is $29 a month (Ahrefs pricing) and XeoRank Starter is $19 a month (XeoRank pricing), each with narrower limits.

The AI tracking options take some reading. Core includes 100 GEO prompts a day across five LLMs, there is an AI Search add-on at $89 a month for AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT (pricing), and SE Visible is a standalone product at $99, $189 or $355 a month for 200, 450 or 1,000 prompts.

Work out which one you need before you compare.

They want fixes, not only exports. SE Ranking's WordPress link is an article export from the Content Editor (help article). If what you need after an audit is someone to change existing pages, titles, schema and layouts, that is a different job.

Its MCP key has account-level access. SE Ranking says the MCP key has the same access as the account. That is convenient, and worth knowing before you hand it to an AI assistant.

What SE Ranking does well

SE Ranking puts a lot in one plan. Core covers 10 projects, 2,000 daily tracked keywords, 250,000 audit pages, AI prompts, MCP access and 25,000 API credits, with a 14-day free trial and no card (pricing). Agencies can add white label through the Agency Pack at $69 a month billed annually. For a team that wants rank tracking, audits and AI prompts on one bill, it covers a lot of ground.

The alternatives in more detail

Semrush

Semrush adds PPC, local and market data to SEO. The SEO plan is $139 a month ($117.33 billed annually) on the prices page, while the SEO Toolkit help page lists $139.95. It covers 5 websites and 500 daily keywords, with AI prompts starting on the $199 Starter tier. There is a 7-day free trial and a free plan. Its MCP is read-only and consumes API units.

Best for teams that need PPC, local and market data alongside SEO. Skip it if you want an MCP server that can write.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs Starter is $29 a month, billed monthly only, with Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker, 200 credits and 50 tracked keywords (Starter plan). Lite is $129 for 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords and 5 AI prompts. MCP is on Lite and above. Patches can change titles and meta descriptions, published manually, and publishing them needs the Project Boost Max add-on at $200 a month per project (pricing).

Best for a low-cost start with narrower limits than SE Ranking Core.

XeoRank

XeoRank costs less to start and focuses on fixing what the audit finds. Starter is $19 a month with a 14-day free trial and no card.

Pro is $49 and Growth $109 a month (pricing).

It includes a cloud crawler with rules that know the page type, rank tracking by country, state or city and device, keyword research with real search volumes and clusters, and Search Console and GA4 reports you can export as a PDF or a Google Doc, white-labeled on Growth (white-label reports). Backlink analysis with a disavow file builder is on Pro and above. AI visibility asks ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity your buyer questions and is reported per engine, next to an overall rate.

The MCP server has more than 200 tools on every plan. Your own assistant can edit existing WordPress pages, including Elementor, and Framer and code sites, and it asks before each change. On WordPress, writes are off for each site until you enable them, new pages are saved as drafts, and every change to a page's content is snapshotted so it can be rolled back.

Best for teams whose audits produce lists nobody fixes. Skip it if research depth or a desktop crawler decides the purchase.

Surfer

Surfer is a content tool rather than a suite, from $49 a month billed yearly. Pick it if content optimization is the part of SE Ranking you use most. See Surfer SEO alternatives.

Best for content optimization. Skip it if you rely on SE Ranking's rank tracking.

Screaming Frog

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler at £199 a year per user, or $279 on its pricing page. It is a companion to a suite rather than a replacement, since it has no rank tracking.

See Screaming Frog alternatives.

Best for a desktop crawl alongside a suite. Skip it if you need rank tracking.

When to stay with SE Ranking

Stay if you run an agency or a small in-house team that wants rank tracking, audits, AI prompts and white label in one subscription, and the Core limits fit your client list. If you only need AI answer tracking, SE Ranking's own SE Visible may be enough without switching vendors.

Best for agencies and small in-house teams that want everything on one bill. Skip it if you want an assistant to change existing pages after an audit.

What XeoRank does not do

XeoRank's keyword and backlink databases are smaller than those of Semrush or Ahrefs. It has no desktop crawler. It does not write articles in bulk: the content engine creates new posts as WordPress drafts (a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post), and the Writing Agent drafts from the author's own material rather than producing one-click articles. It does not build links.

How to choose

  1. If research depth matters most, compare Semrush and Ahrefs on the data you use.
  2. If you want the same scope for less, start with Ahrefs Starter or XeoRank Starter and check the limits against your sites.
  3. If your audits produce lists nobody fixes, pick a tool whose agent can make the changes, with your AI assistant asking before each one. That is the gap XeoRank was built for. A free site analysis shows what it finds first.

Sources and how we compared

We compared each tool using its own pricing page, feature pages and help documentation, all checked on 13 October 2026. For each one we recorded the lowest paid plan, rank tracking, AI answer tracking and site audit limits on that plan, whether it can change your website, and whether it offers an MCP server.

Where two of a vendor's own pages disagree, we show both figures. We did not buy every plan, so features behind a sales call are described from the vendor's documentation. XeoRank is our product, and its details come from our own pricing page and documentation.

Questions

How much does SE Ranking cost?
As of 13 October 2026, SE Ranking Core is $129 a month ($103.20 billed annually) and Growth is $279 ($223.20 billed annually), with a 14-day free trial and no card. White label is an Agency Pack add-on at $69 a month billed annually, and the AI Search add-on is $89 a month.
What is a cheaper alternative to SE Ranking?
Ahrefs Starter is $29 a month, billed monthly only, with 50 tracked keywords and Site Audit. XeoRank Starter is $19 a month with a 14-day free trial and no card, and Pro is $49 a month. XeoRank asks ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity your buyer questions; its pricing page shows what each plan includes.
Do Semrush and Ahrefs have more data than SE Ranking?
They publish larger figures. Semrush reports 28.8 billion keywords and 43 trillion backlinks, and Ahrefs reports 29 billion keywords and 35 trillion backlinks in its history. Each vendor counts differently, so treat the figures as rough. Pick them if keyword and backlink research depth matters more to you than having everything in one plan.
Does SE Ranking have an MCP server?
Yes. MCP access is included on Core, and SE Ranking says the MCP key has the same access as the account. Semrush's MCP is read-only and consumes API units, Ahrefs offers MCP on Lite and above, and XeoRank's MCP server, with more than 200 tools, is on every plan.
Can XeoRank replace SE Ranking?
Partly. XeoRank covers technical SEO, rank tracking, Search Console and GA4 reporting, AI answer tracking and edits to WordPress, Framer and code sites through your own AI assistant, which asks before each change. Its keyword and backlink databases are smaller, it tracks three AI engines (ChatGPT, Gemini grounded in Google Search, and Perplexity), and it does not write articles in bulk.
