Screaming Frog alternatives: cloud crawlers and SEO platforms compared with the desktop spider
Mohit M, SEO · Updated
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is the reference desktop crawler, and for what it does it is cheap: a yearly license costs £199 per user on its SEO Spider page and $279 on its pricing page, and the free version crawls 500 URLs. The alternatives worth a look are Sitebulb, which has both a desktop app and a cloud crawler, the site audits inside Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking, and XeoRank if you want a cloud crawl tied to rank tracking, Search Console data and fixes.
We make XeoRank, one of the tools compared here. Prices and limits below come from each vendor's own pages, checked 13 October 2026. Prices change, so confirm before you buy. None of these is a like-for-like copy of the Spider: each trades crawling on your own machine for features the Spider leaves out.
The short answer
Keep Screaming Frog if you are a technical SEO who crawls large sites on your own machine. Teams that need to share crawls in a browser should compare Sitebulb Cloud with the audits in Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking. If the crawl is not the problem but rankings go untracked and fixes go unapplied, XeoRank joins those steps up, and you can run it alongside the Spider.

When to stay with Screaming Frog
Start here, because for many people the answer is to keep it. A paid license has no URL limit beyond your computer's memory and storage, it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, it has a command-line interface, and it connects to Google Analytics, Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and link-metric services, with OpenAI, Gemini, Ollama or Anthropic available for custom AI prompts during a crawl (SEO Spider). If you are a technical SEO who audits large sites on your own machine, the tools below add features around the crawl rather than replace it.
Best for technical SEOs who want full control of the crawl on their own computer. Skip it if a team needs one shared audit in a browser.
Why teams look beyond the Spider
It runs on one machine. Screaming Frog has no cloud product, so crawl size depends on the computer running it, and sharing a crawl means sharing files. A team that wants everyone looking at the same audit in a browser needs something else.
It finds problems but stops there. Its SEO Spider page does not describe rank tracking, AI answer tracking, a public API or changes to your site. Someone still has to open the CMS and make every fix by hand.
It is licensed per user. Each seat is a yearly license, with volume discounts on the pricing page. For one person that is a small cost.
For a team it adds up, and each member still crawls separately.
The Screaming Frog alternatives in more detail
Sitebulb
Sitebulb is the alternative closest in kind. Its desktop app runs on Windows or Mac. Lite crawls up to 10,000 URLs per audit, and Pro defaults to 500,000, which you can raise to 2 million if your computer can handle it. Sitebulb Cloud runs in the browser for larger sites and teams, from £95 a month according to its pricing FAQ. There is a 14-day free trial with no card, and the pricing page lists MCP access. Desktop prices did not appear in the page when we checked, so see the page for current figures.
Best for teams that want the alternative closest in kind, on the desktop or in the cloud.
Semrush Site Audit
Site Audit runs "over 140" checks in the cloud and crawls up to 100,000 pages a month on the entry tier. It comes inside the SEO Toolkit, which is $139 a month on the prices page ($117.33 billed annually), while the SEO Toolkit help page lists $139.95. That tier also tracks 500 keywords daily. Semrush's databases are larger than XeoRank's: 28.8 billion keywords and 43 trillion backlinks, per its data page.
Best for teams that want a cloud audit next to Semrush's larger keyword and backlink databases.
Ahrefs Site Audit and Ahrefs Free
Ahrefs Starter is $29 a month on the pricing page, billed monthly only, and its help article lists Site Audit, Rank Tracker, Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer, with 200 credits and 50 tracked keywords. If you only audit sites you own, Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, is free for verified sites. Ahrefs Patches can change titles and meta descriptions through a JavaScript snippet or a Cloudflare Worker, published manually, and publishing them needs the Project Boost Max add-on at $200 a month per project (pricing).
Best for free audits of sites you own, or a low-cost start on Starter.
SE Ranking
SE Ranking Core is $129 a month, or $103.20 billed annually, and audits up to 250,000 pages alongside 2,000 daily tracked keywords, 10 projects and 100 AI prompts a day across five LLMs. There is a 14-day free trial with no card.

Best for teams that want audits, rank tracking and AI prompts in one cloud tool.
XeoRank
XeoRank runs its crawl in the cloud and puts the results next to rank tracking, Search Console and GA4 data, AI answer tracking and an agent that can fix what the crawl finds. Starter is $19 a month with a 14-day free trial and no card. Pro is $49 and Growth $109 a month (pricing).
The crawler checks HTTPS, redirect chains, broken links, soft 404s and error responses, missing or placeholder titles, missing meta descriptions, missing H1s and skipped heading levels, images without alt text, conflicting canonicals and errors in existing structured data, plus site-level problems such as duplicate titles, H1s and content, many pages canonicalised onto one URL, and sitemap URLs that declare a different canonical. Checks that need context the crawler cannot establish, such as author, sources, dates and thin content, are kept out of the issue list, and crawls started from the dashboard render JavaScript with headless Chromium for pages that need it. Issues go into a fix queue. Through the MCP server, your own AI assistant can apply fixes on WordPress, including Elementor, Framer and code sites, and it asks before each change.
Best for teams that want rankings tracked and audit fixes applied, not only found. Skip it if you need a crawler you run and control locally.
Free single-page checks from XeoRank
If you only need to check one thing, XeoRank's free tools cover a few checks the Spider also does. They are single-page or small-batch checks, not a crawler, and they will not replace a full crawl.
- The redirect checker tests the http, https, www and non-www versions of a site and shows every redirect hop.
- The canonical tag checker shows whether a page's canonical points to itself, is missing, or points to a different URL.
- The sitemap checker finds the sitemaps a site declares, counts their URLs, checks lastmod dates and spot-checks that listed URLs load.
- The meta tag checker and H1 checker read titles, descriptions and headings for up to 10 pages at a time.
What XeoRank does not do
XeoRank has no desktop crawler, and it does not match the Spider's raw crawl depth on your own machine or its AI-assisted extraction. Its keyword and backlink databases are smaller than those of Semrush or Ahrefs. It does not write articles in bulk, its content engine creates new posts as WordPress drafts (a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post), and it does not build links. If you need a crawler you run and control locally, keep Screaming Frog.
How to choose
- If you crawl large sites on your own machine, keep the Spider. The license is £199 a year on the SEO Spider page.
- If a team needs to share crawls in a browser, compare Sitebulb Cloud with the audits in Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking.
- If the crawl is not the problem but nobody tracks rankings or applies the fixes, XeoRank joins those steps up. You can run both: the Spider for deep audits, and a cloud platform for tracking and fixes.
Sources and how we compared
We compared each tool using its own pricing page, feature pages and help documentation, all checked on 13 October 2026. For each one we recorded the lowest paid plan, where it runs, how much it can crawl, rank tracking and AI answer tracking, whether it can change your website, and whether it offers an MCP server.
Where two of a vendor's own pages disagree, we show both figures. We did not buy every plan, so features behind a sales call are described from the vendor's documentation. XeoRank is our product, and its details come from our own pricing page and documentation.
Questions
- How much does Screaming Frog cost?
- As of 13 October 2026, the SEO Spider is free for up to 500 URLs. A paid license is per user per year: £199 on its SEO Spider page and $279 on its pricing page, with volume discounts. The paid version has no URL limit beyond your computer's memory and storage.
- Is there a cloud version of Screaming Frog?
- No. Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, and Screaming Frog does not offer a cloud product. Cloud alternatives include Sitebulb Cloud and the site audits in Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and XeoRank.
- What is a free alternative to Screaming Frog?
- Screaming Frog's own free version crawls up to 500 URLs. Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) is free for sites you verify. XeoRank has 14 free tools, including redirect, canonical and sitemap checkers, but they are quick checks of a few pages or a sitemap, not a full crawl.
- Can XeoRank replace Screaming Frog?
- Not for desktop crawling. XeoRank's crawler runs in the cloud and is tied to rank tracking, Search Console data, AI answer tracking and an agent that applies fixes through your own AI assistant, which asks before each change. Teams that need AI-assisted extraction or crawls limited only by their own machine should keep Screaming Frog.
- Does Screaming Frog track rankings?
- No. Screaming Frog SEO Spider does not track keyword rankings or AI answers, and it does not change your site. It connects to Google Analytics, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights to add data to a crawl.
