Ahrefs alternatives: 6 SEO tools compared on price, data and site edits

, SEO · Updated

The main Ahrefs alternatives are Semrush for a broader suite with PPC and local tools, SE Ranking for more tracked keywords at a similar price, Screaming Frog for desktop crawls and Surfer for content. If you want AI visibility per engine and an AI agent that edits your site without buying an add-on, XeoRank starts at $19 a month on our pricing page.

We make XeoRank, so weigh our section with that in mind. Every competitor fact below comes from the vendor's own pages, checked 13 October 2026. Prices change often, so confirm before you buy.

The short answer

Ahrefs remains the better fit if link research is the centre of your work, your team already knows Site Explorer or you want AI mentions next to backlink data, and Ahrefs Free or Starter may cover lighter needs. Semrush suits PPC and local work alongside SEO, SE Ranking gives more tracked keywords at Lite's price, Screaming Frog adds a deep crawl and Surfer is for writing. XeoRank fits if you want AI visibility and an agent that makes changes on WordPress, Framer or code sites through your own AI assistant.

What Ahrefs costs, and cheaper ways to use it

Ahrefs' pricing page lists Starter at $29 a month (monthly only), Lite at $129, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499 a month billed annually. Lite covers 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 5 AI prompts and 1 user, and extra users cost $40, $60 or $80 a month depending on plan, up to a cap.

Two cheaper paths are worth checking first. Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, is free for sites you verify, useful if you only need data on your own domain. Starter at $29 includes 200 credits, 50 tracked keywords, Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker, enough for occasional research.

The usual reasons to look elsewhere sit above Starter. The MCP server needs Lite or higher. AI tracking beyond Lite's 5 prompts means Brand Radar, from $199 a month, with custom prompt packs at $50, $100 or $250. And Patches change only titles and meta descriptions, through a JavaScript snippet or Cloudflare Worker that you publish manually, and publishing them needs the Project Boost Max add-on at $200 a month per project (pricing).

When to stay with Ahrefs

Ahrefs' data page reports 29 billion keywords, kept from 110 billion seen, and 35 trillion backlinks in its history. Its comparison page argues its 35 trillion are live links while Semrush's 43 trillion include dead ones. Brand Radar tracks AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity and ChatGPT, plus Claude, where each check counts as eight, according to the Brand Radar page.

Stay if link research is the centre of your work, your team already knows Site Explorer, or you want AI mentions next to backlink data. XeoRank does not replace that: its keyword and backlink databases are smaller than Ahrefs', and it has no PPC or ads research suite, no local listings management and fewer AI engines than dedicated trackers.

Best for teams whose work centres on link research. Skip it if you want page fixes beyond titles and meta descriptions.

1. Semrush, a broader suite

Semrush's pricing page lists the SEO plan at $139 a month ($117.33 billed annually), Starter at $199, Pro+ at $299 and Advanced at $549, plus a free plan and a 7-day trial; its SEO Toolkit help article shows $139.95, $249.95 and $499.95 for Pro, Guru and Business instead. The same pricing page includes PPC research, local SEO, content tools and market data.

Its data page reports 28.8 billion keywords across 142 databases and 43 trillion backlinks, and its Site Audit runs over 140 checks. Semrush's MCP server is read-only and uses API units. See Semrush vs Ahrefs for the full head-to-head.

Best for teams that want PPC and local tools alongside SEO. Skip it if you want an MCP server that can write, since Semrush's is read-only.

2. SE Ranking, more tracking for the money

SE Ranking Core is $129 a month ($103.20 annually), the same list price as Ahrefs Lite, and includes 2,000 tracked keywords against Lite's 750. Core also covers 10 projects, 1 seat, 250,000 audit pages, 100 GEO prompts a day across 5 LLMs and MCP access, with a 14-day free trial and no card. Growth is $279, and white label is the Agency Pack at $69 a month extra on annual billing.

Its standalone AI tracker, SE Visible, costs $99, $189 or $355 a month for 200, 450 or 1,000 prompts. The Content Editor exports to WordPress with a choice of post status.

Best for teams that want more tracked keywords at Lite's price.

3. XeoRank, AI visibility and site edits in the plan

Starter is $19 a month with a 14-day free trial and no card. Pro is $49 a month and Growth $109 a month; pricing shows what each plan includes. XeoRank asks ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity your buyer questions, each engine reported separately, so there is no separate AI add-on to buy.

Every plan includes a technical SEO crawler that understands page types and, in crawls started from the dashboard, renders JavaScript when needed, keyword research with real search volumes and clusters, content briefs, and Search Console and GA4 reports. Pro and above add live rank checks by country, state or city and device, and backlinks with a disavow file.

Where Ahrefs Patches stop at titles and meta descriptions, XeoRank's agent works on whole pages. Through the XeoRank MCP server, which has more than 200 tools on every plan, Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor or VS Code can edit existing WordPress pages and posts, including Elementor layouts, write titles to Yoast, Rank Math or All in One SEO, add schema, and work on Framer and code sites. Your AI assistant asks before each change, WordPress writes stay off for each site until you enable them, new pages are created as drafts, and edits to a WordPress page's content keep a snapshot you can restore.

Best for AI visibility and an agent that makes changes on WordPress, Framer or code sites through your own AI assistant. Skip it if link research is the centre of your work, since its databases are smaller than Ahrefs'.

4. Screaming Frog, a technical crawl on your own machine

The SEO Spider is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, licensed per user per year and free for up to 500 URLs. The product page shows £199 a year and the pricing page shows $279. It connects to Google Analytics, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights, but has no cloud version, no rank tracking, no AI visibility tracking and no public API, and it does not change your site.

Best for a deep technical crawl on your own machine. Skip it if you want crawls shared in the cloud alongside rank tracking.

5. Surfer, content optimisation for writers

Surfer bills yearly: Discovery $49 a month (120 documents, 1 seat, no AI prompts), Standard $99, Pro $182 and Peace of Mind $299. It centres on a content editor, an AI writer and a content audit; its pricing page lists keyword research, page tracking and ranking-drop alerts, but does not clearly describe a technical crawler or backlink data. Its AI Tracker gives Standard 25 prompts, though Surfer's pages disagree on whether Standard covers only ChatGPT or five engines.

Best for writers who want a content editor and an AI writer. Skip it if you also need technical crawling or backlink data.

6. ChatSEO, a low-cost chat assistant

ChatSEO prices in euros excluding VAT: Starter €29 to €79 for 1 site with no MCP, Pro €49 to €99 for 3 sites with MCP, and Ranker €79 to €129 for 10 sites. It publishes to WordPress, Shopify and Webflow "only if you ask", and its MCP server has 38 tools, including ones that publish, update and delete Shopify articles and one that removes a site and its data from ChatSEO, with no confirmation step described.

Best for anyone who wants a low-cost chat assistant. Skip it if you need a confirmation step, since none is described for its MCP tools.

Sources and how we compared

We compared each tool using its own pricing page, feature pages and help documentation, all checked on 13 October 2026. For each one we recorded the lowest paid plan, the free option, the keyword, backlink and crawl data the vendor reports, its AI visibility features, whether it can change your website, and whether it offers an MCP server.

Where two of a vendor's own pages disagree, we show both figures. We did not buy every plan, so features behind a sales call are described from the vendor's documentation. XeoRank is our product, and its details come from our own pricing page and documentation.

Questions

How much does Ahrefs cost?
In October 2026 Ahrefs' pricing page listed Starter at $29 a month, billed monthly only, then Lite at $129, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499 a month billed annually. Some Ahrefs pages show euro prices instead.
Is there a free version of Ahrefs?
Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) is free for sites you own and verify. It is not the full research suite, and we found no free trial stated for the paid plans.
What is a good Ahrefs alternative for backlinks?
Semrush. It reports 43 trillion backlinks against Ahrefs' 35 trillion, but Ahrefs says its figure counts live links while Semrush's includes dead ones, so the two are not directly comparable.
Which Ahrefs alternative can edit my website?
Ahrefs Patches change titles and meta descriptions only, and publishing them needs the Project Boost Max add-on. Surfer and SE Ranking export content to WordPress. XeoRank's AI agent edits existing WordPress pages, including Elementor layouts, plus Framer and code sites; your AI assistant asks before each change, and WordPress writes are off for a site until you turn them on.
