Surfer SEO alternatives: six content tools compared, and what else you might need

, SEO · Updated

The main Surfer SEO alternatives are Frase and Clearscope for content optimization, the Semrush Content Toolkit and SE Ranking for a content editor inside a wider SEO suite, Writesonic for an AI writer with tracking, and XeoRank if your gap is technical SEO, rankings and fixes to pages you already have. Surfer itself is a content tool for writers, with plans from $49 a month billed yearly on its pricing page.

We make XeoRank, one of the tools compared here. Every competitor price below comes from the vendor's own page, checked 13 October 2026. Prices change often, so confirm on the vendor's site before you buy.

The short answer

Surfer remains the better fit if your team mainly writes and refreshes articles and already has another tool for technical SEO and rankings. For a different editor, compare Frase and Clearscope, and for content and technical SEO in one subscription, look at SE Ranking or Semrush. If the writing is fine but pages underperform because of technical issues, untracked rankings or unapplied fixes, XeoRank covers that side while you keep your editor.

Why people look for a Surfer alternative

Surfer is priced around documents and seats. Discovery is $49 a month billed yearly for 120 documents and one seat, with no AI prompts. Standard is $99, Pro $182 and Peace of Mind $299, and AI Search Analytics, which only tracks, is $82 (Surfer pricing). Teams that want AI answer tracking have to move up a tier or add the tracking plan.

AI Tracker coverage is unclear. The AI Tracker page lists 25 prompts tracked weekly on Standard, but Surfer's pages disagree on the engines: one says Standard covers ChatGPT only, while the FAQ lists Gemini, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Check which engines your plan includes before you rely on it.

It is a content tool. Surfer's core is the content editor, the AI writer and the content audit. Its pricing page lists keyword research, page tracking and ranking-drop alerts, but a technical crawler and a backlink index are not clearly described, so expect to pair it with another tool for technical SEO. Its MCP server writes content inside Surfer rather than changing your live site.

What Surfer does well

Surfer is built around the writer. The content editor, AI writer and content audit sit in one place, and its WordPress plugin exports a finished piece to a new draft or into an existing post. If your team writes and refreshes a lot of articles and wants on-page guidance inside the editor, that focus is the reason to buy it.

The Surfer SEO alternatives in more detail

Frase

Frase Starter is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for one seat and one site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month, and AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI with 50 prompts. Professional is $129, or $103 billed yearly. Every plan includes an MCP server and a CLI, and Frase publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix. Its pricing page says the agent "publishes on its own when you let it", so decide whether you want that switched on.

There is a 7-day free trial with no card.

Best for teams that want AI tracking and publishing included on the entry plan.

Clearscope

Clearscope Essentials is $129 a month for 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts a month, with unlimited users and projects. Business is $399, and there is a 14-day free trial. Every plan includes query tracking on ChatGPT and Gemini, which shows when your brand is mentioned. It suits content teams that want shared access without paying per seat.

Its pricing page does not describe a site crawler or publishing.

Best for content teams that want unlimited users.

Semrush Content Toolkit

The Content Toolkit is $60 a month billed annually, and its WordPress plugin publishes live or as a draft. Site Audit and rank tracking sit in the separate SEO Toolkit, which is $139 a month on the prices page ($117.33 billed annually), while the SEO Toolkit help page lists $139.95. It makes sense if you already pay for Semrush.

Best for teams already on Semrush. Skip it if you want site audits and rank tracking in the same purchase.

SE Ranking

SE Ranking Core is $129 a month, or $103.20 billed annually, with a Content Editor that exports to WordPress with the post status you choose. Core also covers 10 projects, 2,000 daily keywords, 250,000 audit pages and 100 AI prompts a day across five LLMs, with a 14-day free trial and no card. It puts content and technical SEO in one subscription. See SE Ranking alternatives for more.

Best for teams that want content and technical SEO in one subscription.

Writesonic

Writesonic Starter is $79 a month billed annually for 15 articles, 10 site audits and 50 prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews. Its WordPress integration creates new posts as drafts and can update existing posts. More engines are Enterprise only.

Best for teams that want an AI writer with tracking and WordPress drafts. Skip it if you need more engines below Enterprise.

XeoRank

XeoRank is not a Surfer replacement for writers. It is an SEO and AI visibility platform with an agent, and it covers the work Surfer leaves to other tools. Starter is $19 a month with a 14-day free trial and no card. Pro is $49 and Growth $109 a month; see pricing for what each includes.

  • A site crawler checks technical SEO and on-page basics (titles, meta descriptions, H1s, headings, image alt text, internal and broken links, redirect chains, duplicates, HTTPS and mobile), and flags empty pages and errors in existing structured data. Checks that need context the crawler cannot establish, such as author bylines, sources and thin content, are kept out of the issue list.
  • Rank tracking works by country, state or city and device, alongside keyword research with real search volumes and keyword clusters, plus Search Console and GA4 reports.
  • Content briefs draw on your Search Console queries and rival pages, drafts get a rankability score calculated by rules rather than an AI model, and on Pro and above the Writing Agent reviews a draft for unsourced claims and filler.
  • Through the MCP server, your own AI assistant can edit existing WordPress pages, including Elementor, and Framer and code sites, and it asks before each change.

Best for pages that underperform because of technical issues, untracked rankings or unapplied fixes. Skip it if what you need is an editor for writers.

What XeoRank does not do

XeoRank does not write articles in bulk. Its content engine sends new posts to WordPress as drafts (a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post), and the Writing Agent drafts only from the author's own notes and interview answers rather than producing one-click articles. It has no desktop crawler, its keyword and backlink databases are smaller than those of Semrush or Ahrefs, and it does not build links. If what you need is an editor for writers, Surfer, Frase or Clearscope fit better.

When to stay with Surfer

Stay with Surfer if your team mainly writes and refreshes articles, wants the editor, AI writer and content audit together, and already has another tool for technical SEO and rankings. Discovery covers 120 documents for one seat at $49 a month billed yearly (pricing), and the WordPress export keeps your publishing flow simple. Switching editors costs time, so only move if a limit is actually in your way.

Best for teams that mainly write and refresh articles. Skip it if you want technical SEO and rank tracking in the same tool.

How to choose

  1. If you want a different editor, compare Frase, Clearscope and Surfer on seats, document limits and whether AI tracking is included. Clearscope includes unlimited users; Frase includes AI tracking and publishing on Starter.
  2. If you want content and technical SEO in one subscription, look at SE Ranking or Semrush.
  3. If the writing is fine but pages still underperform because of technical issues, rankings nobody tracks or fixes nobody applies, XeoRank covers that side, and you can keep writing in the editor you like. A free site analysis shows what it would find first.

Sources and how we compared

We compared each tool using its own pricing page, feature pages and help documentation, all checked on 13 October 2026. For each one we recorded the lowest paid plan, the writing and optimization features, AI answer tracking, technical SEO and rank tracking, whether it can change your website, and whether it offers an MCP server.

Where two of a vendor's own pages disagree, we show both figures. We did not buy every plan, so features behind a sales call are described from the vendor's documentation. XeoRank is our product, and its details come from our own pricing page and documentation.

Questions

How much does Surfer SEO cost?
As of 13 October 2026, Surfer's pricing page lists Discovery at $49 a month, Standard at $99, Pro at $182 and Peace of Mind at $299, all billed yearly. AI Search Analytics, a tracking-only plan, is $82. Discovery includes 120 documents and one seat, with no AI prompts.
What is a cheaper alternative to Surfer SEO?
Frase Starter is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for 10 articles a month plus AI tracking on ChatGPT and Google AI, according to its pricing page on 13 October 2026. XeoRank Starter is $19 a month, but it is not a content editor: XeoRank covers technical SEO, rankings and AI answer tracking.
Does Surfer SEO do technical SEO?
Surfer's pricing page describes a content editor, an AI writer and a content audit, and lists keyword research, page tracking and ranking-drop alerts. A technical site crawler and backlink data are not clearly described there, so plan on a separate tool for technical SEO.
Can XeoRank replace Surfer?
Only partly. XeoRank has content briefs, a rules-based score for drafts and a Writing Agent on Pro and above, but it does not write articles in bulk, and its content engine publishes a new brief to WordPress as a draft (a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post). It is built for the technical SEO, rank tracking, Search Console reporting and site edits that Surfer does not focus on.
Which Surfer alternatives publish to WordPress?
Frase publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix. Writesonic creates new WordPress posts as drafts and can update existing posts, SE Ranking exports with a post status you choose, and the Semrush Content Toolkit plugin publishes live or as a draft. Surfer's own plugin exports to a new draft or an existing post.
