How to rank on ChatGPT: a step-by-step plan for getting cited

, SEO and AI visibility · Updated

To rank on ChatGPT, you need ChatGPT search to find your pages and choose them as sources. In practice that means letting OpenAI's search crawler in, being visible in the search index it draws on, answering questions plainly with specific facts, and being named on the pages ChatGPT already cites for your topic.

There is no way to pay for a place in a ChatGPT answer, and no setting that guarantees a citation. What you can do is remove the reasons ChatGPT would skip you. The plan below does that in order.

How ChatGPT picks sources

When a question needs current information, ChatGPT can search the web and show the pages it used as linked sources. It does not search for every question: some answers come from the model's training alone, and those carry no citations you can win.

Three things decide whether your page can be one of those sources:

  • OpenAI's crawler has to be allowed. OpenAI documents three bots. OAI-SearchBot fetches pages for ChatGPT search, GPTBot collects training data, and ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user asks. OpenAI states that "sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI crawler documentation).
  • Your pages need to be findable in a search index. In May 2023 Microsoft announced it was bringing Bing to ChatGPT as the default search experience. OpenAI has not published exactly how today's ChatGPT search ranks sources, and it now runs its own crawler too. Many SEOs still report a link between Bing visibility and ChatGPT citations, so treat Bing as an input worth covering rather than a confirmed mechanism.
  • The page has to answer the question better than the alternatives. That part is ordinary content quality: a direct answer, specific facts, and a source people trust.

Step 1: allow OAI-SearchBot

Open your robots.txt and check that OAI-SearchBot is not disallowed, either by name or by a blanket rule for all user agents. A blanket rule written to keep out "AI bots" can remove you from ChatGPT search by accident.

You can block GPTBot if you do not want your content used for training and still allow OAI-SearchBot for search. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to take effect for search (OpenAI). Our free AI crawler checker reads your robots.txt and shows which AI bots can fetch your pages. Also check that your firewall or CDN is not blocking the bot even when robots.txt allows it.

Step 2: get indexed in Bing

Add and verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and check that your important pages are indexed. Then set up IndexNow, a free protocol that notifies participating search engines when you add, update or delete a page, so they do not have to wait for a crawl. Many CMSs and CDNs support it with a plugin or a setting.

If your key pages are indexed in Google but not in Bing, fix that before you write anything new.

Step 3: answer the question in the first sentences

ChatGPT quotes short passages. Put the question as a heading, the way a buyer would ask it, and answer it in the first one or two sentences below. The answer should still make sense if it is lifted out of the page with nothing around it.

Compare "We offer flexible plans for every team" with "Starter costs $19 a month for one site, with a 14-day free trial." The second can be repeated as an answer. The first cannot. Our guide to answer engine optimization has a full before and after example and an on-page checklist.

Step 4: use specific facts and cite them

Vague pages give a model nothing to repeat. Replace "fast", "affordable" and "trusted by many" with numbers, dates, named sources and short quotations.

There is research behind this. The GEO paper by Aggarwal et al. (2023) tested changes to pages on a benchmark of generative search answers. Adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised visibility by up to about 40%, while keyword stuffing did little.

Step 5: get named on the pages ChatGPT already cites

For commercial questions such as "best CRM for small agencies", the cited pages are often roundups, comparison pages, review sites and forums, not only vendor sites. If those pages list your competitors and not you, your own site has a ceiling.

To find them:

  1. Write down 10 to 20 questions your buyers ask, without your brand name in them.
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT with search on, and copy the cited URLs from each answer.
  3. Repeat a few days later. Answers change, so keep the URLs that appear more than once.
  4. Sort the list into pages you can influence: roundups that accept submissions, directories, review sites, partners and publications you could pitch.

When we ran four questions about SEO platforms on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on 13 October 2026, the 12 answers cited 93 different domains. semrush.com was cited 11 times and on all three engines; xeorank.com was not cited once. That list of 93 domains is the outreach plan.

Step 6: keep pages dated and current

Show a visible "updated" date on pages that carry prices, versions or rankings, and keep the facts on them correct. An answer engine choosing between a page with this year's prices and an undated one has an easy choice. When you update a page, ping IndexNow so Bing sees the change.

Step 7: measure weekly, per engine

ChatGPT answers churn. Profound reported that the half-life of an AI citation is about 11 days, and that how long a page stays cited on one engine says almost nothing about how long it stays cited on another. So:

  • Keep a fixed question set and run it on a schedule.
  • Record whether your brand is mentioned and whether your site is cited, separately.
  • Record which domains are cited instead.
  • Report ChatGPT on its own rather than inside a blended score across engines.

You can do this by hand in a spreadsheet. XeoRank runs the question set for you when you start a scan: it asks ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity, records the sources each answer cites, and shows ChatGPT on its own next to an overall rate. Pro is $49 per site a month (pricing lists what each plan includes). Other trackers cover more engines or more prompts; see our comparison of AI visibility tools.

What does not work

Keyword stuffing. Repeating the target phrase does not make a page more quotable. The GEO paper found it did little, and it makes the page worse for readers.

Buying fake reviews. In August 2024 the US Federal Trade Commission announced a final rule banning the sale and purchase of fake reviews, including AI-generated ones. Buying them is a legal risk, not only wasted money.

Treating llms.txt as a ranking factor. llms.txt was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 as a Markdown file that summarizes a site for language models. Google says you do not need to create "AI text files" to appear in its AI features (Google Search Central), and OpenAI's crawler documentation does not mention it. A file can help AI agents find your docs, and our llms.txt generator makes one in a minute, but do not expect it to change whether ChatGPT cites you.

Asking ChatGPT about your own brand. "What is [your brand]?" will usually describe you. It proves nothing about whether you appear when a buyer asks a category question.

Questions

How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, because OpenAI says sites that opt out of it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Then make sure your pages are indexed in Bing, answer common questions in the first sentences of a page, and get your brand named on the roundups and comparisons ChatGPT already cites.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI uses separate crawlers: GPTBot is for training models, and OAI-SearchBot is for ChatGPT search. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
Does ChatGPT use Bing?
Microsoft announced in May 2023 that Bing would be ChatGPT's default search experience. OpenAI has not published exactly how ChatGPT search chooses sources today, but many SEOs see a link between Bing visibility and ChatGPT citations, so being indexed in Bing is a sensible step.
Does llms.txt help you rank on ChatGPT?
There is no evidence that it does. llms.txt is a proposal from September 2024, and Google says you do not need AI text files to appear in its AI features. It may help AI agents read documentation, but treat it as optional.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?
OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search. Being cited for a competitive question usually takes longer, because it depends on your pages being indexed and on other sites mentioning you.
