AEO vs GEO vs SEO: what each one means and what changes in practice
Anjaneyulu Jadda, SEO and AI visibility · Updated
SEO, AEO and GEO are three names for getting the same page in front of a searcher. They differ in where the searcher is looking.
- SEO (search engine optimization) earns a ranked link in Google or Bing results.
- AEO (answer engine optimization) earns the direct answer: a featured snippet, a voice answer, or the one-line answer at the top of an AI response.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) earns a citation inside an answer an AI model writes, in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews.
The term GEO comes from a 2023 research paper by researchers at Princeton, IIT Delhi and others. They found that adding quotations, statistics and cited sources to a page raised its visibility in generated answers by up to about 40% on their benchmark, while keyword stuffing did little.
The short version
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a link | Be the answer | Be a cited source |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, voice, the first line of AI answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Unit you track | Position for a keyword | Whether you own the answer | Mention and citation rate per prompt, per engine |
| Main levers | Crawlability, relevance, links | Direct answers under question headings, structured data | Specific facts with sources, being named on sites the models trust |
| Data source | Search Console, rank tracking | SERP features, AI answers | Repeated prompts to each AI engine |
Which AI surface reaches the most people
Not every AI surface is worth the same. Rank them by reach:
- Google AI Overviews appear above the normal results on an ordinary Google search, with no click from the user. When Google decides to show one for a query, it changes the economics of every link below it. Whether an Overview appears for your important queries is the first thing to check.
- Google AI Mode is a separate tab the user chooses. It will answer almost anything when asked, so it tells you whether your page can be quoted more than how many people see it.
- ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude are products the user opened on purpose. They reach fewer people than Google but the people asking are often further along in a decision.
Overview triggers also vary between runs and between devices. Track the rate across several checks, and check mobile separately if your buyers search on phones.
The engines do not agree with each other
A page that ChatGPT cites is not necessarily one Perplexity cites. Profound found that how long a page stays cited on one engine says almost nothing about how long it stays cited on another, with correlations of 0.03 to 0.09; in its words, "The engines decide independently." Our own small check also found the engines differ. On 13 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity four questions about SEO platforms. The 12 answers cited 93 different domains. Only a handful, such as semrush.com, showed up on all three engines.
So measure each engine on its own. A single blended "AI visibility score" hides the engine where you are missing.
GEO vs SEO: what changes on the page
Most of the work is SEO work done more carefully. These are the changes that move AI answers, in the order we would make them:
- Make sure AI crawlers can read the page. Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended, and make sure the main text is in the HTML rather than only rendered by JavaScript.
- Answer the question in the first two sentences under a heading that matches the question. Models lift short, self-contained answers.
- Replace general claims with specific ones and cite them. "Plans start at $19 a month for one site" gets quoted. "Affordable pricing" does not.
- Add structured data that describes the entity: Organization with
sameAslinks, Product or SoftwareApplication with offers, and FAQPage where the page really is a list of questions. - Get named on the pages the engines already cite for your topic. For commercial questions these are usually "best X tools" roundups, comparison pages and review sites. If every cited roundup lists your competitors and not you, that is the gap to close.
- Keep the page current. Dated pages with an "updated" date and current prices are easier for an engine to trust than undated ones.
How to measure it without fooling yourself
- Use the questions buyers ask, not your brand name. "What is XeoRank?" will name XeoRank and proves nothing.
- Keep the question set fixed so the trend means something.
- Record mention and citation separately. Being named without a link is still worth knowing.
- Record which domains are cited instead of you. That list is your outreach and content plan.
XeoRank asks ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity a fixed set of buyer questions; see pricing for what each plan includes. It reports each engine separately, next to an overall rate, alongside your Search Console data and technical SEO audit. See AI visibility or start with a free site analysis.
Questions
- What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
- AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to be the single answer shown for a question, such as a featured snippet, a voice answer or the first line of an AI answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) aims to be one of the sources an AI model reads and cites when it writes a longer answer in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. In practice the two overlap heavily and most teams treat them as one programme.
- Does GEO replace SEO?
- No. AI search features retrieve pages from a search index before they write an answer, so pages that are not crawlable, indexed and ranking reasonably well are rarely cited. GEO adds work on top of SEO; it does not replace it.
- How do you measure GEO?
- Ask the AI engines the questions your buyers ask, on a fixed schedule, and record whether your brand is mentioned, whether your site is cited, and which other sites are cited instead. Track each engine separately, because they cite different sources.
- Is AEO the same as optimizing for featured snippets?
- Featured snippets were the original answer engine target. The term now also covers voice assistants and the short direct answers in AI chat products. The core technique is the same: answer the question plainly and early on the page, under a heading that matches how people ask it.
