The best GEO tools in 2026, sorted by the job you need done
Anjaneyulu Jadda, SEO and AI visibility · Updated
The best GEO tool is the one that covers the part of generative engine optimization you are missing: measuring AI answers, letting AI crawlers in, fixing pages, or producing content. Most products do one or two of those jobs, so sort them by job before you compare prices.
This guide does that sorting. Every price and engine count below comes from the vendor's own pricing page or documentation, checked on 13 October 2026, the same data as our comparison of nine AI visibility tools. We make XeoRank, one of the tools listed, and we describe its limits as plainly as the others'. For background on GEO itself, read what generative engine optimization is.
The short answer
Sort GEO tools by job before you compare prices. To measure AI answers, Otterly.AI has the lowest entry price, Scrunch Core includes 125 prompts, AthenaHQ covers the most engines on a self-serve plan and Profound suits enterprise teams. Check crawler access first, since you can start free. To fix existing pages, XeoRank edits them, AthenaHQ and Writesonic can update existing WordPress posts, and Scrunch's Enterprise plan serves bots a separate version. AthenaHQ, Writesonic and Profound also publish new posts, while XeoRank creates new posts as WordPress drafts.
The four GEO jobs
| Job | What the tool does | Tools that cover it |
|---|---|---|
| Measure | Asks AI engines your buyers' questions and records mentions, citations and the sources cited instead | Profound, AthenaHQ, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Scrunch, Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Writesonic, XeoRank |
| Crawler access | Checks that AI crawlers can fetch and read your pages | Profound (crawler analytics from CDN logs), Otterly.AI (GEO URL audits) and Scrunch (site audits), AthenaHQ (robots.txt, llms.txt and an AI-readiness site audit), XeoRank (site crawler and free checkers) |
| Fix pages | Changes the pages you already have, or what bots see | XeoRank (edits existing pages), AthenaHQ and Writesonic (update existing WordPress posts), Scrunch (AXP serves bots a separate version, on Enterprise) |
| Content | Writes or publishes new pages | AthenaHQ, Writesonic, Profound, XeoRank (new posts as WordPress drafts) |
One job no tool does for you is getting named on other people's pages. When we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for a "cheaper alternative to Profound or AthenaHQ" on 13 October 2026, the answers cited about 30 different third-party alternative, review and pricing pages. A tool can list pages like those. Getting onto them is outreach, and a person has to do it.
Measure with AI visibility trackers
Measuring is the job most GEO tools were built for, and it is where they differ most on price and engine coverage.
| Tool | Lowest paid price | AI engines |
|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | $25 to $29/mo, 15 prompts | 4; AI Mode, Gemini and Claude cost extra |
| Writesonic | $79/mo (annual), 50 prompts | 3 |
| Peec AI | $95/mo, 50 prompts | Choose 3 |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99/mo per domain (annual), 25 prompts | 4 on its pricing page; its help article names 2 |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | From $199/mo, sold on its own or with an Ahrefs plan | 6 |
| AthenaHQ | $295/mo; free plan available | 11 |
| Scrunch | $250/mo (Core), 125 prompts | 4 on Core; 9 on Enterprise |
| Profound | Not public (7-day trial) | Up to 9 (Enterprise) |
| XeoRank | $19/mo; Pro $49/mo | 3: ChatGPT, Gemini (Google Search grounding), Perplexity |
How they differ, in a line each:
- Otterly.AI has the lowest entry price, but 15 prompts run out quickly. Best for a short prompt list on a small budget.
- Writesonic is best for teams that also want AI-written articles, with WordPress drafts.
- Peec AI adds unlimited users and an MCP server for managing prompts, brands and topics from an AI assistant. Best for teams that manage prompts from an AI assistant.
- Scrunch Core includes 125 prompts on four engines for $250 a month, and its Enterprise plan covers nine. Best for a longer prompt list on one self-serve plan.
- AthenaHQ covers the most engines on a self-serve plan, including Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral. Best for engine coverage.
- Profound suits enterprise teams that need SSO, SCIM, prompt-volume estimates and its research; its MCP server is on the Enterprise plan.
- The Semrush and Ahrefs modules make sense if you already pay for either suite.
- XeoRank reports each engine separately, next to an overall rate. Best for the person who measures, fixes and reports.
Whichever you use, track questions your buyers ask rather than your brand name, and report each engine on its own.
Crawler access: can the engines read you?
An engine cannot cite a page its crawler was not allowed to fetch, so check this before you pay for tracking. You can start free.
- XeoRank's free AI crawler checker shows what your robots.txt allows for each major AI bot, and the robots.txt generator has a preset that allows AI search crawlers while blocking training crawlers. The XeoRank site crawler goes further: crawls started from the dashboard can render JavaScript in a headless browser, and it flags groups of pages whose content loads only with JavaScript, conflicting canonicals and soft 404s.
- Otterly.AI runs GEO audits of single URLs for crawlability, bot access and page speed.
- AthenaHQ covers robots.txt and llms.txt, and its crawler audits public pages for JavaScript dependence, title tags, structured data and whether AI crawlers can read them.
- Scrunch Core includes 5 site audits a month.
- Profound analyses AI crawler visits from your CDN logs, which shows what the bots actually fetched rather than what robots.txt allows.
- Semrush Site Audit, in its separate SEO Toolkit, and the core Ahrefs suite cover technical SEO more broadly.
The vendors' own crawler documentation is free too. Our guide to getting cited by AI links each one.
Fix the pages you already have
Most GEO tools stop at a report. A few take different routes to changing the site.
XeoRank edits the pages you already have. Through the XeoRank MCP server, Claude, ChatGPT, Codex or Cursor can rewrite headings and copy, set titles and meta descriptions in Yoast, Rank Math or All in One SEO, add schema, and rebuild Elementor sections as native widgets on WordPress. The same agent edits Framer projects and code sites on GitHub and Vercel. On WordPress, writes are off for each site until you turn them on, new pages are saved as drafts, and every change to a page's content keeps a snapshot you can restore; Framer and code sites have no snapshots.
Scrunch's AXP serves a separate AI-readable version of your site to bots instead of editing the pages people see, and its pricing page lists AXP on the Enterprise plan. That leaves your CMS untouched, but it means bots and visitors are reading different pages.
AthenaHQ's WordPress integration publishes new posts and updates existing ones, and on Enterprise or Agency plans its Shopify Catalog Optimization publishes optimized titles, descriptions, metadata and FAQs for products. Writesonic's WordPress integration sends a fix back as a new draft or an updated post.
Semrush and Ahrefs audit technical SEO, and neither AI module edits your site. Ahrefs Patches change only titles and meta descriptions and need the Project Boost Max add-on (pricing), and Semrush's Content Toolkit publishes new articles to WordPress.
Content for new pages and posts
- AthenaHQ publishes posts to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Wix, Framer, Payload, Sanity and Contentful.
- Writesonic's Starter plan includes 15 AI-written articles, and its WordPress integration publishes posts as drafts.
- Profound's agents publish to WordPress, Contentful, Drupal, Sanity and other CMSs.
- XeoRank's content engine starts from evidence: Search Console queries stuck on page two or with low click-through, content gaps against rival pages, keyword clusters, and buyer prompts where you are not cited. It builds a brief, scores the draft with a rule-based rankability check, and publishes a new brief to WordPress as a draft, while a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post. Its Writing Agent, on Pro and above, drafts from your own interview answers and notes and flags unsourced claims; it is not a one-click article generator.
Where XeoRank fits, and where it does not
XeoRank is built for the person who measures, fixes and reports: an in-house SEO, a consultant or an agency. One plan combines per-engine AI visibility, a technical site crawler, rank tracking, Search Console and GA4 reporting (including AI referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot), and the page edits above. Starter is $19 a month, Pro $49 and Growth $109; see pricing for what each includes.
It is weaker on engine count (no Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek or Meta AI), on prompt count compared with Scrunch Core's 125, and it has no prompt-volume estimates. It does not publish to Webflow, Contentful or Sanity, and it does not edit Shopify products. If you only need to measure, a dedicated tracker may cost you less.
How to pick
- Write down 20 questions your buyers ask an AI assistant, without your brand name. Every tracker is only as good as its question list.
- Check crawler access first. It is free, and no tracker can fix a blocked crawler.
- Decide who acts on the data. If a content team writes new posts, pick a tool that publishes. If an SEO or agency fixes existing pages, pick one that audits and edits.
- Trial two tools on the same questions and compare the cited domains both of them report. Answers vary between runs, so trust the domains that appear in both.
Sources and how we compared
We compared each tool using its own pricing page, feature pages and help documentation, all checked on 13 October 2026. For each one we recorded the lowest paid plan, the AI engines it tracks, its crawler access checks, any content publishing, whether it can change your website, and whether it offers an MCP server.
Where two of a vendor's own pages disagree, we show both figures. We did not buy every plan, so features behind a sales call are described from the vendor's documentation. XeoRank is our product, and its details come from our own pricing page and documentation. The count of cited third-party pages comes from our own check: we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for a "cheaper alternative to Profound or AthenaHQ" on 13 October 2026.
Questions
- What are GEO tools?
- Generative engine optimization tools help you get cited in AI-written answers. Most of them measure: they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews your buyers' questions and record mentions, citations and the sources cited instead. Some also check crawler access, change your pages or publish new content.
- Is a GEO tool the same as an AI visibility tool?
- Mostly. AI visibility tools cover the measuring part of GEO. GEO also includes letting AI crawlers in, fixing existing pages and producing content, which only some of these tools handle.
- What is the cheapest GEO tool?
- Among the tools we checked on 13 October 2026, Otterly.AI Lite was the cheapest dedicated tracker at about $25 to $29 a month for 15 prompts. XeoRank Starter is $19 a month, and its pricing page lists what each plan includes. Checking crawler access costs nothing with a free checker.
- Can a GEO tool guarantee AI citations?
- No. A tool can measure, find problems and help you make changes, but each AI engine chooses its own sources and answers change often. Treat any promise of guaranteed citations as a warning sign.
- Do I need a GEO tool if I already use Semrush or Ahrefs?
- Try their AI modules first: Semrush sells an AI Visibility Toolkit, and Ahrefs sells Brand Radar on its own or alongside a plan. Neither AI module edits your site. Ahrefs Patches change only titles and meta descriptions, and Semrush's Content Toolkit publishes new articles to WordPress, so you may still want a separate tool if you need existing pages fixed.
