AthenaHQ review: what you get for free, what $295 a month buys, and where it stops
Anjaneyulu Jadda, SEO and AI visibility · Updated
AthenaHQ is an AI visibility platform. It measures how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and other engines talk about your brand, and helps you publish content to change it. It has a free plan, a $295-a-month self-serve plan with 11 engines, and an Enterprise tier.
We make XeoRank, which competes in the same category, so read this review with that in mind. Every fact below comes from AthenaHQ's own pricing, integration, documentation and research pages, checked on 13 October 2026, and we have tried to be as fair about its strengths as about its limits.
The verdict in one table
| Strong | Weaker | |
|---|---|---|
| Engine coverage | 11 engines on a self-serve plan, the widest we found | |
| Price | Free plan to try it | Jumps from free straight to $295 a month |
| Publishing | Publishes to 8 CMSs | Publishes posts and collection items; editing existing pages is not described |
| SEO | Manages robots.txt and llms.txt | No site crawl for technical SEO, no keyword rank tracking |
| Data access | MCP and API exist | API is a paid add-on on Starter |
| Research | Publishes its own studies | Some methods are not fully published |
Pricing
AthenaHQ's pricing page lists three plans:
- Essential, free: $25 of credit, five AI engines, unlimited team members.
- Starter, $295 a month: 3,600 credits a month on 11 engines, with 17% off on annual billing. One credit is one AI response, so 3,600 credits is 3,600 answers across your prompts and engines.
- Enterprise, custom: adds SSO and audit logs.
The credit model is flexible: you can spend credits on more prompts or on more engines. It also means the number of prompts you can track depends on how many engines you run each one on.
What AthenaHQ does well
Engine coverage. Starter tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral. No other self-serve plan we checked covers as many.
Publishing. According to its integration documentation, AthenaHQ publishes to WordPress (as a draft, pending or published), Webflow, Shopify, Wix, Framer, Payload, Sanity and Contentful. If your content team publishes new articles to a headless CMS, that is a real time saver.
A broad platform. Its platform page groups the product into monitoring (visibility, prompt volumes, competitors), insights (sources, crawlability, prioritized opportunities) and actions (content creation, citation outreach, commerce optimization), plus governance with a two-step review.
Research. AthenaHQ publishes studies such as The Science of AI Citation, which looked at 1,761 articles and reported that pages in the top tenth of its citation score were cited 87.0% of the time against 38.6% in the bottom tenth. The authors are clear that this shows a correlation, not cause and effect, which is the right way to present it.
Proof. Its case studies report results such as a 38% month-on-month increase in leads for Popl. These are AthenaHQ's own figures.
Where it stops
Limited technical SEO. AthenaHQ manages robots.txt and llms.txt and connects to Google Search Console and GA4 for reporting. Its crawler audits public pages for what AI assistants can see: JavaScript dependencies, title tags, structured data and whether AI crawlers are allowed to read the content. A full technical SEO crawl for broken links, canonical problems or Core Web Vitals is not described, and we found no keyword rank tracking. Most sites that are invisible in AI answers also have ordinary SEO problems, so you will likely need a second tool for those.
The price step. There is nothing between the free plan and $295 a month, and API access costs extra on Starter. For a small business or a consultant with a few clients, that is a large first step.
Publishing is mostly new content. The integrations publish posts and collection items, and two of them change existing content: the WordPress integration updates existing posts, and on Enterprise or Agency plans Shopify Catalog Optimization publishes optimized titles, descriptions, metadata and FAQs for products. We did not find edits to other existing pages described, such as rewriting a service page's headings or fixing its schema, which is often where the quickest gains are.
Opaque prompt volumes. AthenaHQ's prompt-volume model, described in its QVEM article, claims more than 95% accuracy. The validation behind that figure is not published, so treat the volumes as estimates.
Who AthenaHQ is for
- Brands that need many AI engines tracked without an enterprise contract.
- Content teams that want AI-visibility insight and article publishing to a headless CMS in one tool.
- Teams that already have their technical SEO and rank tracking covered elsewhere.
Who should look elsewhere
- Smaller budgets: Otterly.AI starts at about $25 to $29 a month and Peec AI at $95, with fewer engines.
- Enterprises that need SSO, SCIM and CDN-level crawler analytics: Profound, on a custom quote. Compare them in Profound vs AthenaHQ.
- Agencies and businesses that need SEO and AI visibility together, and changes to existing pages: XeoRank. Pro is $49 per site a month. XeoRank asks ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity your buyer questions (see pricing for what each plan includes), and adds a technical SEO crawler, rank tracking, Search Console and GA4. Through the XeoRank MCP server, your AI assistant edits existing WordPress pages, including Elementor; it asks before each tool call, and WordPress writes are off for a site until you turn them on. It tracks fewer engines than AthenaHQ.

Questions
- How much does AthenaHQ cost?
- On 13 October 2026 AthenaHQ listed a free Essential plan with $25 of credit on five AI engines, a Starter plan at $295 a month with 3,600 credits on 11 engines, and custom Enterprise pricing. One credit is one AI response. API access is a paid add-on on Starter.
- Is AthenaHQ worth it?
- It is good value if you need many AI engines on a self-serve plan, or want a tool that writes and publishes new content to your CMS. It is weaker value if you also need full technical SEO audits or keyword rank tracking: its site audit checks AI readiness, and we found no rank tracking described.
- Which AI engines does AthenaHQ track?
- Starter covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral. The free Essential plan covers five.
- Does AthenaHQ have an MCP server?
- Yes. AthenaHQ offers MCP and API access for ChatGPT and Claude. On the Starter plan API access is a paid add-on; Enterprise includes it.
- What is a good AthenaHQ alternative?
- It depends on the gap. For a lower entry price, Otterly.AI or Peec AI. For enterprise features, Profound. For AI visibility plus technical SEO and edits to existing WordPress pages, XeoRank. See our AthenaHQ alternatives page for prices and engines side by side.
