XeoRank for ChatGPT and Codex: an SEO MCP connector
Vikas Chamarthi, Founder · Updated
To use XeoRank in ChatGPT, turn on developer mode in ChatGPT's settings under Security, add a custom connector with the URL https://mcp.xeorank.com/mcp, and sign in with your XeoRank account. In Codex, add the same URL as an MCP server and sign in with OAuth, or give it a XeoRank API key as a bearer token.
Once connected, ChatGPT or Codex can crawl your site, read Search Console and GA4, research keywords, check rankings, ask AI engines your buyers' questions and edit WordPress pages after you allow it. The server has more than 200 tools, documented in the MCP docs, and the assistant decides which ones to call. You do not need to learn their names.
What ChatGPT can do with XeoRank connected
- Crawl a site and list technical and on-page issues, worst first, with the pages each one affects.
- Read Search Console queries, the pages they land on, URL inspection results and sitemap status.
- Summarise GA4 traffic, including visits referred by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot.
- Research keywords and group them into clusters by intent. See keyword clustering.
- Check where you rank by country, state or city, language and device. Live rank checks are on Pro and above.
- Ask AI engines a buyer question and report each engine's answer separately. XeoRank asks ChatGPT, Gemini (grounded in Google Search) and Perplexity; see pricing for what each plan includes.
- Generate JSON-LD schema and, on WordPress, edit pages, SEO titles and meta descriptions once writes are enabled. Framer projects and code sites on GitHub and Vercel are covered too.
Set up XeoRank in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT's settings, go to Security and turn on developer mode. Custom MCP connectors stay hidden until it is on.
- Go to Connectors and create a new connector.
- Name it XeoRank and paste
https://mcp.xeorank.com/mcpas the MCP server URL. - Click Authenticate and sign in to your XeoRank account. Sign-in uses OAuth, so there is no key to paste into ChatGPT.
- Start a chat with the XeoRank connector enabled and ask it to list your XeoRank sites. If your sites come back, the connection works.
If you cannot find developer mode or the option to add a connector, your ChatGPT plan or your workspace admin settings may not allow custom connectors. Check OpenAI's help pages or ask your admin.
Set up XeoRank in Codex
Codex can sign in with OAuth like ChatGPT, or use a XeoRank API key as a bearer token. To use a key:
- Create an API key in your XeoRank settings.
- Add the server to
~/.codex/config.toml:
[mcp_servers.xeorank]
url = "https://mcp.xeorank.com/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "XYLE_API_KEY"
- Put your key in that environment variable, for example by adding
export XYLE_API_KEY=your_key_hereto your shell profile, then restart Codex.
In the Codex desktop app, the Add MCP server form takes the same two values: the server URL, and XYLE_API_KEY as the bearer token environment variable. The variable name keeps the product's old name, Xyle. Any name works as long as the config and your shell agree. The MCP setup guide has the current snippet for each client.
Codex is also where your code lives. If your site is built from a repository, Codex can read the issues XeoRank found and fix them in your files. If the site is a code site connected to XeoRank through GitHub and Vercel, the agent can commit the fix and deploy it.
Prompts to try first
- "Crawl example.com and list the technical SEO issues, worst first, with the pages each one affects."
- "Which Search Console queries bring impressions to /pricing but few clicks? Suggest a title and meta description for them."
- "How much traffic did ChatGPT and Perplexity send us last month compared with the month before?"
- "Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity which project management tool they recommend for agencies, and list the sites each one cites."
- "Generate FAQPage JSON-LD for the questions on our /faq page, add it to the WordPress page and send me a preview link."
Prompts that run live rank checks or AI answer scans use your plan's allowance. Nothing on a WordPress site changes until writes are enabled for it; Framer edits stay staged until published, and code-site commits deploy when made.
Safety
Reading data changes nothing, so ChatGPT can audit, research and report without extra setup. Changing a site is gated:
- WordPress writes are off for each site until you enable them, and you can switch them off again.
- New pages and page variants are saved as drafts; edits to an existing page change that page directly.
- Every change to a page's content keeps a snapshot, and any snapshot can be restored.
- The agent can send a preview link before anything is published.
ChatGPT asks before each tool call, so you decide whether a change runs.
What it costs
You pay for two things separately: a XeoRank plan, and your ChatGPT or Codex access from OpenAI. On XeoRank, Starter is $19 a month for one site, with a 14-day free trial and no card to start. Pro is $49 a month and Growth is $109 a month. MCP and API access are on every plan, according to the pricing page.
What it does not do
- It does not change what ChatGPT tells other people. Connecting XeoRank gives your own assistant tools; it has no effect on ChatGPT's answers to anyone else. That work happens on your site and across the web. See how to rank on ChatGPT.
- It does not include a ChatGPT or Codex subscription.
- It does not replace your judgment. Your assistant asks before each tool call, and WordPress writes are off for a site until you turn them on.
- It edits WordPress sites with the XeoRank Connector plugin, Framer projects and code sites. For other platforms it produces the fix, such as a JSON-LD snippet or rewritten copy, for you to apply.
Using Claude instead? The Claude integration page covers Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code.
Questions
- Can ChatGPT connect to an MCP server?
- Yes. ChatGPT on the web can add a remote MCP server as a custom connector once developer mode is turned on in its settings under Security. You paste the server URL, name the connector and sign in.
- How do I add XeoRank to ChatGPT?
- Turn on developer mode in ChatGPT settings under Security, create a connector, name it XeoRank, paste https://mcp.xeorank.com/mcp as the server URL, click Authenticate and sign in to your XeoRank account.
- How does Codex sign in to XeoRank?
- Codex can sign in with OAuth like ChatGPT, or use a XeoRank API key as a bearer token. For the key, create one in XeoRank settings, point bearer_token_env_var in ~/.codex/config.toml at an environment variable, put the key in that variable and restart Codex.
- Does connecting XeoRank make ChatGPT recommend my brand?
- No. The connector gives your own ChatGPT tools to audit and edit your site. What ChatGPT tells other people depends on your pages and on what other sites say about you, which XeoRank can measure for each AI engine separately.
- Can ChatGPT edit my website through XeoRank?
- Only after you allow it. ChatGPT asks before each tool call, WordPress writes are off for each site until you enable them, new pages are saved as drafts, every change to a page's content keeps a snapshot you can restore, and the agent can send a preview link before publishing.
