SEO content brief generator: briefs built from your own search data and rival pages

, SEO · Updated

XeoRank's SEO content brief generator builds a brief for one keyword from evidence you can check: your Search Console queries, the pages on your site that already rank, the headings and entities on rival pages, and any content gaps on file. You or your AI assistant write against it, and a rule-based score from 0 to 100 shows how close the draft is before anything is published.

The brief is the middle step of XeoRank's content workflow. Opportunities tell you what to write next, the brief tells you what the page must cover, and the score tells you whether the draft does.

Who it is for

  • Founders and marketers who write their own pages and want to know what a page has to cover before they start.
  • Agencies producing content for client sites, who need a brief they can hand to a writer with the reasons attached.
  • Teams that write with Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor and want the assistant to work from the site's data instead of from memory.

Step one: pick the topic from content opportunities

Before a brief, there is a ranked list of what to write or improve. XeoRank builds it from signals it already holds for the site:

  • Search Console queries where you sit on page two, or rank on page one but earn few clicks.
  • Rising queries in Search Console.
  • Content gaps: topics rival pages cover that your ranking page does not. See content gap analysis.
  • Keyword clusters you have saved but not yet built a page for.
  • Tracked keywords that are stuck.
  • Buyer questions where AI answers cite other sites and not yours.

Each opportunity carries the evidence behind it, so you can see why it made the list before you commit to it.

What goes into a brief

Part of the briefWhere it comes fromWhat it is for
Target keywordYou choose it, or it comes from an opportunityThe search the page is built to answer
Related queriesYour synced Search Console dataOther phrasings the same page should satisfy
Your ranking pagesPages on your site that already rank for related queriesInternal-link targets for the new page
Rival headings and entitiesCompeting pages XeoRank has fetched and readTopics readers expect the page to cover
Content gapsGap analysis already on file for the siteTopics rivals cover that your page misses

Nothing in the brief is written by a model. It is assembled from data XeoRank has already stored, so you can trace each line back to a query, a page or a rival.

Drafting against the brief

The brief does not write the article. There are two usual ways to draft against it:

  1. Your AI assistant does it. Connect the XeoRank MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, ask it to open the brief, and it writes the draft in the chat using the evidence. It saves the draft back to the brief.
  2. A person does it. The brief is readable on the Content page of the dashboard, so a writer can work from it in any editor and paste the draft in.

On Pro and above, the Writing Agent adds a third option: it drafts from your own interview answers or notes, then reviews and revises it, up to four passes, and reports any blockers that remain.

The rankability score

Once a draft is saved, XeoRank scores it from 0 to 100 against the brief's evidence. The score is deterministic. Every check is a rule a reviewer could re-run by hand, the same draft always gets the same score, and each failed check comes with the specific fix.

The score also carries writing blockers. A statistic or a "studies show" claim with no source in its section is a blocker, and so is placeholder text left in the copy. Other unsourced figures are flagged for review. Sources matter for AI answers as well as for readers: in the GEO study by Aggarwal et al., adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised a page's visibility in generative answers by up to about 40% on their benchmark, while keyword stuffing did little.

Publishing the draft

On a WordPress site connected through the free XeoRank Connector plugin, publishing a new brief creates a draft post, and publishing a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post. If the draft still has writing blockers, publishing stops and lists them so you can fix them first; only a person can override them, with a recorded reason, in the dashboard.

On other platforms the draft stays in the brief for you to copy into your CMS.

What the brief generator does not do

  • It does not write the article. You, your writer or your AI assistant write it.
  • It does not publish new pages live. Publishing a new brief creates a WordPress draft that you review and publish yourself; a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post.
  • It does not predict rankings. A high score means the draft covers what the evidence says it should and has no blockers. It is not a forecast of position or traffic.
  • It does not decide your angle. Rival headings show what competitors chose to cover. If a topic does not serve your reader, leave it out.
  • It is only as good as the data behind it. A site with Search Console connected and rival pages on file gets a much fuller brief than one with neither.

A typical session

"Show me the top content opportunities for example.com. Open a brief for the first one, draft the page using its evidence, score the draft and fix anything that fails. Then publish it to WordPress as a draft."

The assistant lists the opportunities, creates the brief, writes and scores the draft, revises it, and creates the WordPress draft for you to review.

Questions

What is an SEO content brief generator?
An SEO content brief generator collects what a page needs to cover before anyone writes it: the target keyword, related searches, topics competing pages cover and pages on your own site to link from. XeoRank builds the brief from your Search Console data and from rival pages it has read, so each item in the brief points back to evidence.
Does XeoRank write the article from the brief?
No. The brief tells a writer, or your AI assistant, what the page must cover. On Pro and above, the Writing Agent can draft from your own material, such as interview answers and notes, but it will not write a piece from the brief alone.
What does the rankability score measure?
It checks a saved draft against the brief's evidence with fixed rules and returns a score from 0 to 100. No language model is involved, so the same draft gets the same score, and every failed check names the fix. It is a readiness check, not a prediction of where the page will rank.
Can XeoRank publish the finished draft?
On WordPress, publishing a new brief creates a draft post through the XeoRank Connector plugin, and publishing a brief that optimises an existing post updates that post. It stops if the draft still contains writing blockers such as unsourced claims or placeholder text, unless a person overrides them with a recorded reason in the dashboard.
Do I need Search Console connected?
It helps a lot. Without it the brief has no query data and no list of your ranking pages to use as internal-link targets, so it leans on rival pages alone. You can connect Search Console from the site's settings in XeoRank.
